Areas of study

« We can deal – more or less from the same viewpoint – with cultures that seemed far away from each other, and we can find out something that unites them. » Arnaldo Momigliano (historian, 1909-1987)

The Institute of History was set up in 1975 as a study center focusing on the contribution that Italy’s history had received from deprived areas, yet amalgamated by the local churches, also in comparison with Southern Italy. Soon after, it was its very founder, Gabriele De Rosa, who widened the scope of the research from the society of the Veneto region to the areas of Central and Eastern Europe, where, after the fall of the Soviet empire, social and religious history started off again. Since 2005 this research line has further expanded, including not only the Veneto region but also the so-called "Venezie", i.e. the entire Italian North-East as a single economic player having an impact on the former Soviet Europe and on global economy. Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan) has subsequently been included in the area of study. In 2017 the Institute becomes a Foundation, banking on this rich heritage, and pursuing its multiple research lines.
